Formula 1 is set to return to Malaysia in 2026, with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Formula One Management (FOM) confirming that the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix will take place at Sepang International Circuit from 2 to 4 October 2026.
Scheduled between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix, the race will become part of the 2026 Formula 1 calendar, subject to final agreements and approval by the World Motor Sport Council. The rest of the championship schedule remains unchanged.
The decision follows an agreement between the FIA, Formula One Management, the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia, and the leadership of both nations. The arrangement ensures Bahrain retains its place on the Formula 1 calendar while bringing the championship back to one of its most iconic circuits.
Sepang International Circuit last hosted a Formula 1 race in 2017 and remains one of the sport’s most recognised venues. Famous for its fast corners, long straights, tropical climate, and unpredictable weather, the Malaysian circuit has produced some of Formula 1’s most memorable races over the years.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem described the agreement as an example of international cooperation and Formula 1’s ability to adapt when faced with challenges.
He said Malaysia has always played an important role in Formula 1 history, adding that the championship’s return to Sepang reflects the strong relationship between the FIA, the Motorsports Association of Malaysia, and the Malaysian Government. He also thanked the leaders of Bahrain and Malaysia for making the event possible.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain, said the race demonstrates Bahrain’s continued commitment to Formula 1 despite ongoing regional challenges. He noted that the event also highlights the close partnership between Bahrain and Malaysia and expressed confidence that fans around the world would enjoy a memorable race weekend.
Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim welcomed the opportunity to host the event, describing it as a symbol of the enduring friendship between the two countries. He said Malaysia is ready to welcome Formula 1 teams, officials, and fans back to Sepang while showcasing the country’s world-class infrastructure and hospitality.
Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali called the announcement excellent news for fans, saying it demonstrates the sport’s ability to find solutions while maintaining an exciting championship calendar.
The return of Formula 1 to Sepang after nearly a decade is expected to generate significant excitement among motorsport fans across Asia and beyond, as one of the championship’s most celebrated circuits prepares to once again host the world’s fastest racing series.
